Graduate Success Stories
Terry
was a single welfare mother of two teenagers when
she decided to pursue a career that offered great
promise and independence. Terry had family experience
with the barriers facing disabled populations and
saw the great potential of court reporting services
for specifically the hearing-impaired. She learned
more about the field from a friend and decided to
enroll at Orleans Technical Institute's Court Reporting Program.
She excelled in the program and gained additional skills as an intern, where she assisted hearing-impaired college students by transcribing lectures via her steno machine and a monitor. This experience set off a light bulb for Terry.
After graduation, Terry earned
money at a part-time job so that she could eventually
start her own captioning business called VoicePrint,
Inc., the first of its kind in the Philadelphia
area. Her company works with schools to provide
live, "in-person" technology that allows a student
with hearing loss to participate fully in the classroom.
Today, Terry teaches part-time at Orleans and her
business is booming to the point that she can't
find enough trained people to keep up with the demand.
